Overview

Intruder is a tactical multiplayer FPS with a heavy focus on stealth - it's Guards vs Intruders, as both teams attempt to eliminate the other (or, in the case of the Intruders, complete their objective). Using a variety of weapons and gadgets, along with teamwork and skill, players can fight across a variety of maps made by the developers or players.

Controls

It might look like the control scheme is overwhelming, but don't worry - we'll break down the important keybindings one by one.

Movement and Character Control
WASD/Mouse Intruder uses a standard FPS control scheme, where WASD moves your character and the mouse moves the camera.
Primary Mouse Fire your weapon, or activate the primary function of your gadget.
Secondary Mouse Aim down the sights of your weapon, or activate the secondary function of your gadget.
Q and E Lean left/right, respectively.
Space Jump.
Shift Toggles crouch on/off.
Alt Toggles prone on/off.
V Pick up an item, or use something (eg. press a button).
R Reloads your weapon. (Enemies can't hear you reload.)
K Play dead - turns you into a ragdoll. You can still speak while ragdolled, but standing back up is noisy and leaves you vulnerable.
Scroll Wheel (Press) Press and hold the scroll wheel while moving to sprint. Uses energy and makes a lot of noise - be careful!
Communication
C Push to talk - hold C to speak locally.
F Pulls out your hand radio - use LMB to speak into it. Anyone on your team can hear you in radio chat.
Tab Press to open the hand signals menu. You'll snap your fingers, which only you and your teammates can hear.
Enter Opens the text chat/terminal. Anyone can see chat messages (unless you're dead, in which case only other dead players see you speak).
Misc. Controls
Scroll Wheel (Up/Down) Opens doors. Allows for incremental opening and closing - you can throw a door open with a quick scroll, or open a crack to throw grenades in.
Number Keys and Equals Key Selects equipment/weapons. Tilde (~) holsters what you have equipped.
I Opens the inventory screen, where you can equip anything you pick up.
X Toggles your current item's mode. Only applies to the SMG and Binoculars.
Esc Opens the menu.

You can also input various console commands into the terminal. There's a long list of them, but here's the most important ones.

Console Commands
/punish [name] Punishes a teammate that killed you. After 4 punishes, the player will be temporarily banned. You can also use just "/punish" by itself to punish the last offender.
/forgive [name] Forgives a teammate that killed you.
/votekick [name] Initiates a votekick against a player.
/mute [name] Mutes a player. Use /unmute [name] to unmute them.
/ms [number] Changes your mouse sensitivity. Default is 1.0

Gameplay Basics

There are two main gametypes - briefcase mode and computer hacking mode. Both teams can win via elimination in any gamemode, however.

In briefcase mode, the Intruders must grab one of two briefcases (walk up to it and press V) and take it to the extraction point, marked with a large purple beam. If the carrier is knocked over or killed, the briefcase will be dropped - make sure to pick it up again if that happens!

In computer hacking mode, the Intruders must hack various computer systems. To hack a computer, walk up to it and press V. You'll need to hack 3 out of 4 computer systems to win, and each computer system has multiple computers (labelled A1, A2, etc.).

The Guards don't have to do anything beyond eliminating all Intruders - there is no time limit on a round. (Don't delay the game, please!) When a player is killed, they enter spectator mode and can only be heard by other players. (You can use the mouse buttons to follow different players, or press F to enter freecam mode.)

Friendly fire is always on - be extremely careful!

Intruder Specific Concepts

At the bottom left of the HUD are three values - Health, Energy, and Balance.

  • Health is self explanatory - if it reaches 0, you die.
  • Energy is consumed by crouch walking, sprinting, and firing your weapon - running low on energy means you'll be nearly unable to aim, and your character will (loudly!) catch his breath. Low energy leads to your weapon shaking when aimed.
  • Balance is a measure of how steady you are on your feet - if it reaches 0, your character will ragdoll. You'll need a moment to regain your footing and stand back up. It increases or decreases depending on your stance and terrain - lying prone on a flat floor has a much higher balance than attempting to jump on a railing. Balance also has an affect on your ability to keep your weapon steady.

One of the most important elements of Intruder is sound. Getting the drop on your enemies is extremely powerful, and you'll rarely lose a gunfight if you've snuck up on someone. Here's a list of things that do and do not make noise:

Audible/Inaudible Actions
Audible (can be heard) Inaudible (cannot be heard)
Walking/sprinting (while standing) Crouch walking/crawling
Firing a weapon (silenced weapons still make some noise, but much less so) Reloading
Ragdolling (eg. the noise if you hit the ground, slipping on something) Snapping your fingers with Tab/hand gestures (can only be heard by you/your team)
Talking in local chat or over the radio Radio clicks (can only be heard by you/your team)
Glass breaking Switching equipment
Explosions Grenade impacts/placing explosives
Falling in water Interacting with objectives (eg. briefcases or computers)
Opening doors/vents (locked door noises are clientside)
Lockpicking

Another important part of Intruder is communication. Keeping in touch with your teammates is incredibly important, but it can be easy to give yourself away. Intruder uses a proximity voice chat system that depends on your volume - if you speak at a whisper, only those nearby can hear you, but speaking loudly means people will hear you from farther away. Speaking on your radio means you'll be heard by everyone on you team, but you're also audible in proximity voice chat - be careful!

Hand gestures (used by pressing Tab) are extremely useful for communicating with your teammates silently - opening the menu will snap your character's fingers, but this is only audible to your team. These are 6 hand gestures - it's a good idea to learn what each one means - asking your friend what he's waving his hand around for is a bad idea when there's an enemy on the other side of a door!

Hand Gestures
Hand Gesture Meaning
Hold (raised fist) Stop, don't move
Go (fist moving up and down) Move forward, go
Point Depends on context
Listen (cupped hand) "Did you hear that?", "Watch your volume"
Countdown Counts down from 3, then points forward to go
Suspect (clawed hand) "Something's wrong", "There's someone nearby", etc.

On the scorebaord, you can see a player's reputation. Clicking the [P] next to their name brings you to that player's profile, where you can see their different reputations. Their overall reputation is visible in game - you can upvote or downvote players depeding on if you think they're a fun, enjoyable person to play with, or a rude and obnoxious one that makes the game unfun. Don't vote people up or down solely because their socre is already high or low - vote on someone after you've played with them, and know if they're a good player or not.

Miscellaneous Tips

  • If a player is alive but knocked over, an enemy can click on them with empty hands to arrest them - this means the player is dead, but able to use local voice chat. An arrested player can press the jump button 5 times to enter spectator mode.
  • Hitting someone in the head with a grenade instantly kills them(except smoke grenades).
  • One way to silently ask if anyone else is alive is to click the radio button a couple of times - this is usually code for "I want to know if anyone else is alive, but I can't talk". If someone else does this or asks if anyone is alive, you can also respond with a radio click or two to tell them silently.
